My address given to a credit reference agency

A friend of mine is going through a breakup - his ex has just given my address to a credit agency, telling them that this is where he lives. He does not and never has.

I have now received one letter addressed to him from a debt collection agency and I am concerned that the use of my address will somehow affect my credit rating. Is this likely?

Any advice on how I should handle this would be gratefully received.

Thanks
Allan

  • Credit is referenced on individuals not on address, so don't worry too much, except you may start getting phone calls. Just send stuff back, marked NOT AT THIS ADDRESS. And maybe give the ex a stern talking to if you have the opportunity.

  • Many thanks for the advice. It has put my mind at ease somewhat. My friend will happily set the credit agency right re: the address and I will probably write them a letter to the same effect.

Is what the ex did strictly speaking, legal? She has a very blase attitude and I wouldn't expect to get anywhere with a confrontation - was wondering if I had any legal recourse?

    Cheers

Depending on the reasons he has given the address, it may constitute fraud, but that would be a criminal matter rather than a civil matter
