You had to be 10 on the day war was declared - it was more related to living through the war than age related as such

Why was this - what was the point about living through the war (WWII I assume).

I started school while the Battle of Britain was still raging, so I was 4 the previous year, when war was declared - and so was my DH. We both 'lived through WWII' and he had a much worse time than I had, being evacuated etc.

It seems an odd thing to expect - age-related free passport, or war-related free passport?

I think I read somewhere that this birth date was decided on as it was assumed that a person born before then would have been working at some time during the war and contributing to the war effort.

Problem is that some modern day 'youngster' has set the age assuming a school leaving age of 16. My OH was born in 1930, left school at age 14 then went on to work in a shipyard for the last year of the war, but he is still too young to qualify for free passport.
