Where/when in Greenwich please?

Into family history so I want to stay for say 3 or 4 nights in Greenwich come summer to do some research of my dockland ancestry. The dates dont really matter at all, say June or July but I need to be fairly central to Greenwich.

Whats the best hotel/dates that I should look at for a single person b and b please?

The travelodge is opening a new hotel in July at Waterloo and they currently have some good rates I noticed, it is only 15 minutes on the tube from Waterloo tube ( 10 minute walk from hotel to tube) to get the Jubillee Line to North Greenwich. You are also in a location near the Thames Embankment if you also want to do some of the tourist attractions such as the Houses of Parliament, London Eye, Imperial War museum etc. Boats also go from the nearby piers to Greenwich. I would go Monday onwards as there are a lot of tube works at weekends on the Jubillee line particularly at the moment. Mon 12 July £32, Tues 27 £39, Wed 28 £39 Thurs £29 for example. Add each night to your basket one at at time as if you block book it will charge the dearest price for all nights. Book breakfast online and it is £5.99 extra for a buffet style breakfast instead of £7.50 if you book on arrival at the hotel.

Thats excellent value but I wonder if they will open on time? That price is based on a non refundable room isnt it but they offer £1.50 insurance to cover cancellation?

Hmm, something to think about isnt it. Many thanks for pointing that one out.

Oh, appreciate the point about booking days separately but wont that cause probs with the booking?

Travelodge usually do open on time I have found, as I like to book newer ones if I get the chance, as think the quality may be better than some of the older ones who need updating. I would book towards the middle or end of July as it opens on the 1st, just to make sure they iron out teething problems.

We usually book saver room dates separate to get the savings and just email them to link up after booking. I never have had a problem- they just give you a plastic card room key that works for all the days booked on arrival. Also if you just add rooms to your basket and do one checkout you get one confirmation booking reference number for all dates. I personally think the £1.50 cancellation fee is a bit of a swizz as it does not cover much and just deselect it.

The TL breakfast buffet is good as you get a choice of hot food items (eggs, bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes), cereals, bakery products, toast with spreads, juices and tea and coffee. There is a TL at Docklands, but think you may find it a bit better and cheaper (as not many people have realised this hotel is open then) to stay at Waterloo, as you are staying for a few days, due to it's good transport links.

I am sure you will enjoy visiting Greenwich.

Probably won't beat Travelodge prices, btw there are some trains from Waterloo East to Greenwich, sometimes you have to change at London Bridge.

  • North Greenwich is for the O2 Arena, is that where you want to be? Or do you want to be near the National Maritime Museum? If so you'll need to change to the DLR.

But selecting a London Hotel also depends on where you're travelling from and how. As many don't have car parks and nearby one might be £25 a day to park.

For the National Maritime Museum it is a 20 minute train journey using the route sugguested by richardw to Maze Hill Station and then a short walk from there. You could also get bus no 188 from Waterloo station to near the NMM, but about a 50 minute bus journey. You could also walk to London Bridge pier (about 20 mins) and get the boat to Greenwich pier (journey time about 20 mins). As davetrouseurs says you can also get the tube from Waterloo to Canary wharf and then transfer onto the DLR to cutty sark (20-25 mins of a journey time including transfers).

If you have not already got one, I would get an oyster card to save on transport costs and just top up as required. Also travel after 9.30am in the morning for cheaper oyster fares weekdays.

I agree with davetrouseurs that if you are planning to drive into London and stay here, it would not be a good idea as parking costs are very high and you would have the congestion charge weekdays etc to consider. If that is the case it would probably be cheaper to stay some where less central that has a free car park.

No, I shant drive in London  I will be coming down by train to Liverpool Street. I think the DLR may be the best for me, I hate hanging around for trains, at least tube and DLR come along quickly.
