The internet is your friend, lots of hints, tips and sewing tutorials, youtube is particularly good.
  • I bought a Silvercrest SNMD 33 A1 a few weeks ago at Lidl for £69 and I am very pleased with it. It's easy to use and does everything I need it to.

I haven't had a machine before so I can't really compare it with anything but having said that I would nevertheless recommend the Silvercrest. A bargain I think.
  • There's a Silvercrest sewing machine at Lidl's again this Thursday, for £59.99. I'm a total newbie and about to start a sewing course. I would like to know if this sewing machine is good value for money and if those of you who have bought them in the last few years are still happy with them? It says it has a 3 year warranty but what does this mean in practical terms if it goes wrong?

  • Hi,

I loved my silvercrest machine, but recently it has started going a bit mental, each time I just want to put in a running stitch the whole thing makes a sharp clunking noise, then the needle gets stuck in the fabric, over and over and over again. Tried everthing, rethreading, new needle, tension settings, bobbin tension, no matter what I did to it nothing seemed to work. Then after hours (and meters of ruined fabric) I managed to get it working for the engine to only go and blow out on me. I am so disapointed. My question is, I was given this machine as a Christmas present in 2012 but I know my mother bought it in the October of that year, but in the booklet etc that came with it I cannot find the promise of a 3 year guarntee like I have seen someone mention on here and unfortunatly as it was so long ago my mother no longer has the original Lidl reciept.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter, I dont really want to fork out a lot more money for a new one if this one is still under a gurantee.

    Many thanks

    Hannah
  • At present, there are 4 sewing machines in my house : a 40 years old Swiss made Elna bought from new, flat bed. Another Elna , nearly as old bought reconditioned for daughter's birthday 10 years ago ( now suffering from paralysis due to inactivity and damp), a 60's British made Singer £10 from a charity shop working but needs attention and finally a Silver Crest from Lidl bought yesterday for £69.99 for daughter's birthday (again).
The shop that services and mends machines, quoted £50 whether it is a mend or service, so after the Lidl manager assuring me I could get my money back, their machine seemed a more cost effective option. I unpacked and tried the machine this morning.(Birthday next Saturday)
It is a tidy, basic machine with a useful carrying handle. The sewing thread spools supplied are rubbish, just buy some Gutterman all purpose thread.Start with a black, white, grey, and a light creamy beige. Also I would buy better quality needles. There are 2 spindles for the thread .One lies horizontally and an extra vertical one for twin needle sewing. I did some basic stitching with the needle provided and a single spool of thread and it worked fine with the vertical spindle .It just seemed strange having the reel lying down. Just me!!
I tried a couple of fancy stitches and after locating which wheels to use to regulate stitch width and length, the effect was good. Much easier than the older machines.
After years of using a heavy all metal machine, the plastic "bits" seemed very light weight, but the inner workings all work the same, I guess the basics of sewing machines have been the same for nearly 200 years. I had a job getting the empty bobbin out of the bobbin case but realised after poking with a little screw driver, that all I needed was a finger nail under the rim!!
Time will tell, but if you are a beginner, follow the threading instructions carefully, and go slowly to start with, I think this machine is fine and well worth the money.

Be careful sewing is an addiction and you do need the children out of the way!! The 2 things do not go together!! Also, if you have a little corner where you can leave the machine out , it is a real incentive to sew. The dust cover is flimsy but OK while you save up for a sturdy carrying bag

Did you realise the original posting here was in February 2010 ?

I've done the same myself ... when I've been in a 'talking' mood or more correctly a writing mood. I've seen something and thinking I am being helpful have added a comment, only to find I am a few years too late.

By the way ... welcome to this great forum
  • Are lidl selling them again?

They had machines in (I didn't see the brand because I have my trusty Janome I batter the living daylights out of) when I was in my local one yesterday. No overlockers left - had the price board up in an empty bin so either hadn't got the stock out yet or had sold out already (this was lunchtimeish).
Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!
