thanks for er, some of the above :)
it starts up at 37 then within 10 mins is at over 50 according to the free software HDD that I downloaded thanks to someone else on this site!
It's not just in this hot weather although that doesn't help. I am not confident enough to open up the PC as I know nothing and it's eccentric as it is.
Would it be a very quick repair?
PC World's laptop cooler tray - is that expensive? Loud fan noise? (it's not exactly quiet as it is)
How do I check the processor heat capacity? I only know ze speed 3Ghz.

As for that amorouse mouse, it's way too hot for that :)

Go and download I8kFanGUI from http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/ and use it to not only monitor temperature, but to force the fan onto full speed, see if it makes any difference to the temperature (or if the fan is faulty).

If the speed is 3Ghz, I presume that its a Mobile Pentium 4 thats running in there, if so mid 50s isnt really that bad, my 2ghz desktop P4 runs at 49 degrees and mobile ones are renowned for running rather hot.

most processors are fine up to 90 degrees - I have a barebones system - well known for being hot boxes.. and my computer consistantly runs at 58 degrees.. it's no problem.

Not quite true. For example P4 Northwoods and Prescotts are designed to thermal throttle (50% performance reduction) at about 75 - 80 C and will shutdown completely at 90 - 95C.
