Charity shops

  • Quick scan of entire shop, then skim through ladies clothes, onto books, skim bags, belts and scarves. Perusal of bric a brac and jewellery. Study the valuables in locked cabinet.

Don't bother with a 'poshed up' CS. The dealers have already been in before the shop opened and taken everything of any use.

Oooh I love having a hunt around the charity shops, i'm lucky to have 13 in my town. The best one being 'The Salvation Army', a very large shop and definately has the lowest prices of them all. Even my OH now has a hunt after the bargins i've come home with for him. I just couldn't afford to dress my daughter so well, without the help of charity shops.

    My best bargins:-
    A pine wardrobe £20.
A pair of disney princess curtains for £3.50 and once opened found it contained a matching single quilt and pillowcase.
A girls lovely NEXT embroidered denim jacket, priced at £1.50 and charged just 50p at the till.
    A girls Animal sweatshirt, 1.95 and a matching T-Shirt 99p.
Now thinking about it, I could go on forever with DD's clothes bargins ... but the majority of it, once outgrown I sell back on Ebay, at least there are no postage charges to add on top.

    and lastly .......

Daughter had an Hello Kitty guilet from H&M that she treasured, cost £19, I finally managed to get her to part with it (sold it on ebay), and 1 month later, found an identical one in the charity shop for £2.50 ..... boy am I in her good books now :T

I find it quite amusing how many of my friends would not set foot inside a charity shop, yet are quite happy to buy second hand from Ebay??
A creative mess is better than tidy idleness :D

I don't often shop in them but if I'm passing & have nothing better to do I'll pop in. We have a Red Cross, Tenovus, BHF & Cancer Research in town & I prefer the BHF one. mainly cos its new & it has really nice stuff in it. The CR one is dark, dingy & run by women who really don't like you going in - you don't get a nice welcome there. So I tend to avoid it. I haven't bought much but the best bargain I got was a Jasper Conran jeans for my 8 yr old - BNWT for £2.50!! I felt rather smug when my SIl commented on them & she had bought a pair for her own DD in Debenhams for £18!! I did gloat!
  • Best bargain in local animal shelter shop was 2 big suitcases for £3. Ideal for my Mum who's moving.
  • I get loads of stuff from charity shops and boot sales. My work clothes I have on today cost me £3.50 barring shoes and undies. I work in a poshish area so there is some good stuff to be had. I got loads of work tops for £2 each in one a few weeks ago, Next and M &S. Another had a sale and everything was £1. Got loads of stuff, even a summer coat. People in work always comment on my clothes and are astounded at how much I pay.

One day I had on a Next top that cost me £2, my colleague paid £28 for the same one. She was gutted to say the least!

I find the big chains are more expensive than the independent ones although Marie Curie did a 3 items for £10 a while ago and I got a new dressing gown, new with tags of £22 M & S top and looked like new top. Need to shop around really.
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

There is a great Sue Ryder shop near me. Today I picked up a shirt (M&S), sweatshirt and leather shoes all for £10.20. All looked like new, particularly the shoes. Last week I picked up a lovely jacket from their retro/vintage section for £3.50. Well chuffed!

Amazing what you can get in charity shops! I wanted a metal meat plate (with the spikes on to hold my xmas turkey)they cost £15 or more
Got one in my Hospice shop for £2, and I'm helping the Hospice!
For clothes I use Ebay. I like Jacques Vert and Frank Usher clothes, and have a wardrobe full. Nothing cost more than £20, but if I had to replace it all with new, my OH reckoned it would cost £10,000!!!
I have just bought an outfit for my nephew's wedding. Frank Usher dress and Jacket, Jacques Vert hat, shoes and bag. Whole lot new would have been £500, cost me £30. Very pleased with myself! :)

A Bargain is only a bargain if you need it!

  • I love charity shops too and always go in them when out and about. I very rarely buy new clothes (obviously underwear and tights etc) and the kids are picking up my habits too! My fave is a shop near us which has a 3 for £1 rail and there are great bargains to be had, I've had shirts for OH, trousers for work for him, jumpers, t shirts and have saved a forune over the years. Last week I went in and they had some m&s underskirts for 50p so I got 3 as I have been on the lookout for some for a few weeks now, if I wait long enough then I usually find what I want.

Just wondered if anyone else was the same as me. I've always like charity shops and bought bits and pieces over the years, mainly kitchen stuff but recently started volunteering in a charity shop and now seem to be obsessed with buying secondhand.

So my recent buys are a pair of Next girls jeans (11-12) and girls Debenhams jeans for £1.50 each, a pair of smart trousers for me for £2.49 and some cargo type trousers for dd for camp for £2 although they are so nice that she wants to wear them all the time.

When my kids were younger I was tempted to buy second hand stuff but my Mum always used to say we werent that poor and she bought us a fair bit off stuff too. Now that its kind of more popular to buy secondhand and recycle she hasnt commented lol
