blue tooth or 2 way radio for canal boat?

sounds strange but.. my brother has just moved onto a long canal boat and my dad wants to buy him a thing to help him communicate with the person at the front of the boat.. he has looked at 2 way radios and thinks they are a good idea but they have wires on thier headphones and boating involves lots of jumping onto locks etc but he was wondering about blue tooth technology- neither of us know anything about this!! we have seen people with ear pieces in talking to other people is this blue tooth? do you need to spend money on your phone when communicating to each other wehn using blue tooth? can anyone think of a different or better communicating alternative- not shouting!

bluetooth is normally used in conjunction with mobile phones or between computers.

why not just use 2 way radios.. you dont need to have headphones because they have speakers... just clip it to your belt.
also consider cost.. 2-way radios are very cheap (which is good if you drop one in the water)... if you could find radios that use bluetooth i suspect they'd be quite a bit more expensive.

2x 2-way radios for 30 quid...
