Validity of comparison quotes

I notice that in all on line comparison quote sites the price quoted by my present supplier is 20% lower than I am currently paying. Am I correct in assuming that at the end of the first year (usage and unit prices remaining unchanged) I would be 20% in debit and consequently the following year's cost will increase by at least 20%?

If I am correct this is not a "saving" as advertised but a hidden deferred payment.

Is the quote on exactly the same tariff as you are on now?

Did you input your usage in units (kwhs) or in £££s?

Have you considered that it may be you that has made a mistake somewhere?

You see, it would be unlikely that all the comparison sites which are generally independantly owned and operated all make exactly the same mistake.

If you explain why exactly you think all the comparison sites are stating your current supplier is 20% less than you are currently paying (giving all appropriate details such as supplier, tariff, supply area, usage etc as appropriate) then I'm sure someone will explain how you have made an error.

  • Yes in cases like this I always consider that I may have made a mistake and I think the problem has something to do with tariffs although I could not see "online v7" anywhere on the npower options.

I have now changed to a different tariff with online administration saving about £250 pa which seems a lot for the little extra work of reading online bills! Everything else seems the same as at present. I wonder for how long I have been overpaying?
  • Npower have now confirmed that I was on an older version of sign on line tariffs and that changing to a newer version will be a saving.

I suppose it would have been too much to ask that they inform me when the new one became available.

    Caveat emptor.

That indeed applies to most of the companies.

With the ever changing tariffs it would generate a huge amount of paperwork to inform all of the customers, all of the time!

BG for example have introduced no less than 27 new tariffs in the past 4 years - many with early exit penalies.
