  • I find that when items smell of smoke, putting it in a bag with tumble dryer sheets helps take the smell off!

I'd say try the dry cleaners, you may have to try a few to see if any offer bag cleaning services, but your not going to lose much out of a yell.com search and calling a few numbers up to ask.
  • Have you tried leather polish? You can get some polishes that are designed to soak right into the leather - although this might end up just masking the smell, but a lot of the polishes leave a wonderful scent behind.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
  • Hey,

Thank you to everyone for your help. I tried dry cleaners, but the ones that did bags wanted at least £45 which is just silly.
I spoke to the seller, and she says that she's partially sighted etc etc. Anyhow, she offered me £10 back, and I've asked for £20, which I think is more than fair given the time I'm investing. Do people think that's fair?

I left the bag with newspaper in it all last night and it's definitely better. Will keep going with that suggestion and if I find some essential oil that will be my next step. And then a good leather condition I think. Even if it doesn't go completely, hopefully it will eventually fade with use!

  • Hi, I had a similar problem a long while ago with a leather jacket that I lent to a friend that smoked. When I got it back it smelt really badly of cigarette smoke, found that it soon went on the lining but the leather smelt bad until I bought some perfume oil, it's cheap and it makes it smell like new. Unable to add link but if you google Amphora aromatics and do a search in there for leather it's £1.66 a bottle or alternatively check out your local "goth" supplier!!
  • Use baby wipes on the leather - they're conditioning and gentle and have a lovely smell!

Perhaps this is a lesson to smokers! I've bought paperwork home this weekend that came from a smoking household and have had to put it in a sealed bag in the car because it's stinking the house out.

    Nag over ;-)
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!
  • I bought a highchair for my baby that smelt terrible of cigerettes- so I cleaned and cleaned it with vinegar even put the cover in the washing machine, didn't seem to do much at the time and every time I picked my baby up she smelt of fags, yuk!

After a few weeks the smell has gone and it's ok now.

What shocks me more is that you continued to use it!
    Gone ... or have I?

That reminds me of the time when my oh went to the corner shop for something and encountered someone offering an apple pie for cash-knowing it was my fave he 'splashed' out and bought it home beaming!! When we opened it up it just reeked of cigarette smoke, goodness only knows where it had been and it went straight in a bin bag outside-it stank the whole flat out!! We did have the whole bizarre conversation about why someone would sell an apple pie and why my oh would even consider buying-but he did win brownie points for trying bless him LOL
