Family of 4 going to New Zealand and Oz summer 2004?

Hi,
We are hoping to book a long trip overseas next summer. Probably starting in Sydney and then going on to Auckland N.Z followed by a stopover somewhere direct on the way home for a bit of R+R. This will probably be a 5 week trip as we have family all over the place that we would like to visit.
We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids (3 and 7 next year). My plan/hope is that we will do 18 days Sydney (as we will be moving out there permanently the following year) and then 12 nights Auckland followed by 3 nights Singapore on the way home. I need it to coincide with the school summer holidays so are looking to travel between the 23rd july and the 1st September (dates can be flexible between those times).
I have been religiously been saving Tesco's points and now have £600 worth of vouchers. I plan on continuing and am currently getting aroung £80 worth of vouchers a month. I was really excited to see that Virgin holidays have signed up to accept reward vouchers and that they can plan custom trips to Oz and N.Z BUT husband also travels a lot for work and should have enough B.A airmiles to cover one of the tickets. I am now completely confused as I don't know whether
a)I should use husbands airmiles and convert my tesco's points into further airmiles and travel B.A.
b) I should just use the Tesco's vouchers to exchange with virgin holidays and they can shop around for a cheaper flight for us and save the airmiles for the following year when we go out there to live.
I am also confused as to whether I should book earlier if it means I can get a cheaper flight or book later and keep saving my Tesco's points.
I am not worried about booking accomodation as we should have someone to stay with in both Sydney and Auckland. Sorry for the long post but we know the flights are going to be astranomical and I want to try and get them as cheaply as possible.
