I currently have a Lexmark P704 but the inks cost a fortune. I'd rather have something more economical - can anyone recommend one please.

Do you want just a stand alone printer or an all in one machine?
Do you want to print photos or not? if yes then HP and Epsom are good but be careful some HP's only accept small ink with high price!
for stand only printers some goods ones i have seen are the Epsom D88(£50ish) and the basic canon but i dont know the model!
for all in ones the new borhter range is quite cheep and good for ink as well as the canon MP150.0 -
Heartily recommend the Brother DCP-117C all in one and its close cousins.
A Google search on Brother all in one printers gives you this http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B2GGGL_enGB176&q=brother+all+in+one+printers
Genuine carts are very reasonable and compatibles available from around £8 for a full set of 4.
Allthough dedicated photo printers give best image results the Brother range gives very acceptable prints at low cost. I beleive the DCP- 117C is still available from PC World and others for £50.
