help with my prepayment meter

Options
A little update from a past thread. I have a prepayment meter from eon as i had a debt with them. I have paid it off in full, well actually paid it off ages ago but eon forgot to adjust my meter, so they refunded me over £500 a few months ago.

Anyway after posting on here a eon rep looked into my case to see if they could take the meter out and basically told me they will never remove the prepayment meter. (well they wont until the guidelines change)

Is there anything else I can do apart from move? I know this sounds drastic, but there is only me and my husband and baby living here and we are putting in £10 a day. Speaking to other people who dont have meters they pay so much less.

I really am in the position now where all I can do is move, otherwise all our savings are going to get swallowed by the meter. Pleae help as I am so stressed about this.

I can't see the problem if eon will not give you the service you want go elsewhere;)
most suppliers will remove pp meters where there is no debt but they may charge fees and require a deposit.
Something is not right £10 per day is very high,to compare i have gas and elec on pp and currently spend £25 per week between both on average in the cold weather.

They will be paying less presumably because they consume less.

A prepayment meter today charges about the same as a standard tariff with the same supplier.
Some discounted tariffs are available for those on credit meters, as well as discounts for other types of payment (e.g. payment by DD, dual fuel, paperless billing, etc) ... but it's not a massive amount.

Also be aware of the number of posts on here by newcomers seeking help because they 'only paid £50 a month by DD' and then found they were hundreds of pounds in debt because they had consumed a lot more than they were paying for.

You could try changing supplier, but any new supplier will only extend credit to you if they feel it is appropriate to do so. As I understand things, E.On have refused to extend credit to you since you got into trouble previously with a credit meter.

Thanks, I will see what other suppliers say, we would be happy paying a deposit.
And yes we think it is very high.

    .

We only live in a two up two down, and other than the immersion on for 45 min a day, everything else is switched off. We are very aware of the electricity we use and do unplug anything not in use.
  • hi i was in a similar siuation to you, but i ended having prepayment meters in due to running up a debt with bg i have now paid off that debt so wanted to swop them over to credit meters but failed the credit check they did on me which i sort of guessed i would do due to being on a debt management plan but looking around on the net i then rang edf who said transfer to them for prepayment, 28 days after that ring them book app they will then swop meters over no charge and i can go onto what tariff i want on direct debit etc made me very happy.
so try them and lmk how you get on.

    I'd get that in writing!
  • i did get it in writing per se i oringinally spoke to them online using the virtual chat, and there is an option to have the transcript emailed to after which i did, i was open and honest and explained everything truthfully and they said switch to them after 28 days request new credit meter to be fitted and all would be ok no credit check and no bond to pay, i also then spoke to them on phone to get the ball rolling and again went through my situation but she already knew this from online chat, and had her clarify that i could indeed swop over to credit meters after 28 days with no bond or credit check and she confirmed this so i would also be able to request a recording of the phone conv as proof as well so hopefully all will go ok, i will update this post again when the time comes, i have roughly 8 weeks till switch over then the 28days i need to be with them b4 i can request the swop of meters so we will see then hopefully.

  • all switched over and meter exchange booked in for 6th june, phoned them up to request meter exchange to credit meters and all they said was i'll just get you a date and did u want both meters changed at the same time, so all looks good.
  • just to update edf were true to there word had meters exchanged today so no longer have prepay meters in house and new tariff will be there online saver version 6, monthly dd will be £76 a month for my usage which is 7200kwh of electric and 12500kwh of gas, so i am well happy with this outcome.
