picking up a new car and insurance

Options
We are picking up my Mums new car bought through the scrappage scheme next week.

The car however will be in my partners name as it was her car that we used to get the deal.

Can my Mum insure the car in her own name, stating her as the owner, as we will be transferring it to her name there and then ?

My girlfriend wont be able to insure it as she is already insured for her own replacement car.

The car will be registered in your partners name, therefore the garage will expect to see insure in your partners name before they allow you to drive off assuming it is a reputible garage. At a later date you will then be able to change the registered keeper to be your mum. This will obviously 'devalue' the car when you mum ever sells it because it adds another owner so she will be the 2nd rather than 1st owner.

  • what about the circumstance where you drive up to a garage to part-ex your own car and then drive away with a second hand one ?... They wouldn't have the document in your name in those circumstances ?
  • So I'll posting this info for the help of others....

the garage will cover us on a 7 day temp. cert FOC so my partner can drive the car home from the showroom.

According to DVLA transfer of ownership occurs immediately the log book is signed over to my Mum.

So its dead simple. My Mum insures the car in her name from midday on the date of collection. We drive it home on the temp. cert and sign it over in the afternoon and everything is fine and dandy.

Realistically, if you think about this logically. There is no need for the temp cert as the garage could witness the ownership sign over and my Mums insurance covers us to drive the car away. However, I think they aren't too comfortable with this, as we have pulled a bit of a fast one with the scrappage deal. So we'll stick with Plan A....
  • There is a flaw in your plan. There will be no Log Book!

You can insure a car in your name and not be the owner tho.
  • Are you saying that the log book will arrive in the post a few days after collecting the car ?

(or just being a pedant coz I'm using owd fogey speak as its actually a V5 or sommat ? ;) )
  • sorry i should of elaborated. The former although your second point is also true.

It normally takes about 7 days to come through depending on post, prevailing weather, etc etc.

wow, you do realise that in addition to devaluing the car you are also relinquishing the "new for old" insurance afforded to brand new cars under the first owner....

As stated, you can insure a car of which you are not the registered owner.

yep.... but my Mum is hardly concerned about residual values given she is almost 70 and the deal saved us £2705 ... roughly 30% discount on the car.

It seems more than a good deal from where we're looking and there were additional factors that made it even more convenient for everybody.
