I'm leaving work this week and want to take my hundreds of files home - is there any way I can just store one folder containing all the files online and then pick it up at home? All the services I've found want me to upload it a file at a time!

zip them up into a single file and send it via email to yourself using http://www.yousendit.com

assuming the files dont amount to anything ridiculously large and your email can handle attachments of that size.

although the above service acts as a "store" for the file for you to download at a later date.

FTP sites allow the uploading of folders and the files contained in them but they can be dificult to use and the easiest way is to use an ftp client software to do it.

your other option would be to use winzip to compress all your folders to a single file upload the file to rapidshare or your choice of upload place rapid share is fine but some ISP's block its use for the free downloads thats why I said there are other options. download the file and extract the files to your pc at home.

There could be a problem with your plan, the files were created at work and on works time, therefore are considered property of the company and sending them home could be considered as theft no matter what you take home personal pictures or customer databases it doesnt matter, yes the company wont be too bothered you taking home your pictures of brad pitt you have as your desktop wallpaper but they wont be happy you taking customer databases.

you need to be very carefull what you do if your company has an IT department then they can trace what you are doing.

    EDIT:
Ok after seeing some of the replies
no option to winzip or install FTP client then you could use a usb memory stick if your running windows XP or 2000 that is easy.
your other option if none of the files are of a sensitive nature would be to ask the IT department to create a CDr/DVDr of your personal files this way you are also covering yourself against the theft thing as they will be giving you the files.

A File Transfer Protocol, some Internet service providers supply you with a FTP.

Who do you connect to the internet with?

If so you could connect to your FTP via Internet Explorer.

it's ok, I'm a teacher and it's all my lesson plans and resources that I made myself, so it's my property. Thanks for the point though, as I like to be legal :)

I think I'll have to do the CD thing...

    thanks very much!

You could always consider an ipod or similar device as they have the ability to hold files. Or maybe your mobile phone if it has the abity to take additional storage cards, or even a portable harddrive.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Could you buy an external hard drive? transfer the data onto it and take it home?
Only a thought might be wrong though, i use a pen drive @ work to put music on my pc so the plug in hard drive could work providing you dont have to load software onto your pc, but im no expert, techies would it work?

Should do - they're plug & play, so all that should be needed is to take in pen drive, stick into USB port, wait for Windows to go through the 'detecting new plug & play device' gubbins, and Bob's your male relation. Drag the folders onto the pen drive, unplug and take home.
