Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my Renault Kangoo Van.
It has been to a diesel specialist who cannot find anything wrong with it.
Wonder if anyone has any ideas, im running out of option beside scrapping it which cant afford to do and need the van for work as im a self employed decorator.
My problems are...
It puffs out black smoke every no and again and it jugs when its driving and when its still. I keep having to rev it to stop it doing it. They thought it was the injectors but they are all fine.
Now heres the strange bit! the first trip of everyday the van runs perfectly but if i stop and start again it just runs terrible for the rest of the day, unless it has been left for about 9 hours and then its ok again.
I was getting used to the jugging and the gagrage told me i should just run it till it dies but yesterday morning it wouldnt start! I jump started it and it was fine. Got the battery checked the battery is fine. This morning it didnt start again! I went inside had a cuppa, went and tried again and it started! I had a look under the bonnet and notice oil on the engine so now im realy confused!
Any ideas!!!!???? Help!!!!!

Take it to another specialist methinks. Not a !!!!!! answer, but there are so many things it could be that I don't think it will get diagnosed over the net. Injectors are usually the 1st thing to suspect, followed by the rest of the pumping system, and that's where it starts to get expensive. Oil over the engine? head gasket?? etc What mileage/age/value does it have??I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Yep my thoughts too, just been on the phone to a different one to book it in.Fingers crossed
its a 2001 and has done 135000. it cost me £1500 3 years ago so i suppose ive had my moneys worth. Anything to do with the pump i would suspect id just have to scrap it.0 -
Could be a fuel leak. You won't necessarily see spilt diesel as some engines suck the fuel up from the tank, rather than pumping it up. Therefore the leak could draw air into the fuel lines, like a drinking straw with a hole in the side.
Check the engine bay, particularly around the pump and injectors. O-rings and seals can often go hard and square (instead of soft and round) and let air/fuel past.
The black smoke is quite normal under heavy acceleration, and is indicative of unburnt fuel.0 -

Agreed, but can also be soot in the cold exhaust of a modern diesel being given the heaveho under regenerative conditions. Lets be honest, it could be loads of things??
Mileage and age dictates no real money can be spent, another 40squids on diagnosis, then time to depart;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

It's over fueling so could be air intake problem - not enough air.
Clean the crank case breather.
Clean the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve, possibly MAF (mass air flow sensor) - both of which are in the air intake flow.
These things are reasonably simple and should have already been checked by the expert along with injectors.0 -
Thanks for your replies everyone. Very helpfull and giving me a little glimmer of hope :beer:0

You could talk to Diesel Bob http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/
and see if there's any known common faults with the engine.
Don't scrap the van; there's something wrong with it. It's not obvious enough for your specialist to find. But they run a business and anything that takes too much time is probably not cost effective for them.
If it runs fine the first time each day then I'd be suspicious that it was either engine temperature related or fuel supply.
Is there a clear fuel line under the bonnet anywhere? If so you could look to see how much air is in the line when it runs fine and when it doesn't.Happy chappy0 -
i would get a second opinion on the injectors, these are the most likely cause of this kind of fault and a common problem on this van....work permit granted!0

get a second garage to run a live data test
chack coolant temp
air flow
air temp
and fuel pressure amongst a whole host of other things0 -
My Shogun used to do this. Was down to a leaky seal in the fuel pump.
And I've just seen the oil on the engine bit - I've seen that happen when the oil pressure sensor broke, oil was forced past th rubber seal and sprayed all over the engine bay.0
