The tariff that I am on at the moment with British Gas is a dual fuel fixed price 2011. I want to change over to their new dual fuel Websaver 6 tariff. When I try and fill in the form online a box comes up and warns me that there will be a cancellation charge incurred of £70 for gas and £30 for electricity if I want to switch over.
My question is: is there away around the cancellation charge or am I stuck?
Thanks

Why not phone British Gas and ask them?0

you are stuck you enterd a fixed term contract if you break that it will cost you the amoutn you agreed at the start of the contract. Every now and again suppliers will wave this but they don't have to.0

If it costs less to cancel your old account than you save on the new one then changing will still be a good thing. That said, I would like to think that the cancellation fee would be waivered if your staying with the same company; only fair, as your showing a bit of loyalty. I would phone BG and speak to someone rather than let the computers automatically bill you, never know, you might get a result.0

I have phoned now and gone through the process. The lady said she would reverse the £100 charges but the change of account has not yet shown on their system, and when it does she would phone me and confirm.0

I switched over this morning to Websaver 6 and received email saying that "Your gas and electricity tariff will be updated shortly to WebSaver 6." But I have logged on the British Gas and it is still reflecting the old tariff. How long does it usually take?0

The BG computer system has a few limitations(what do you expect for a mere £500,000,000?) but it eventually gets there; (almost as quickly as my Sinclair ZX81)
BG are pretty good at waiving penalty exit fees if you change to another BG tariff - I suspect most companies are similar.0
