Uninsured Cars - Legal if not driven?

Well if someone wants to risk it, fair enough.

If the plod pull you and you can't prove it's insured, it may well be impounded. Good luck getting it back.

OP, you could try asking your insurer for a definitive answer rather than conflicting opinions on a forum.

People are saying that it is legal to keep an uninsured car as long as it is kept on private property.

What happens if that car is stolen and causes damage to other cars, properties or even death?

Would the car's owner be liable?

Personally I think people are excessively paranoid about this.
I've driven for 23 years or so and NEVER been pulled over.

I would definitely agree with your there.
Why don't people ask there professionals rather than spending hours on here??

The same as if someone steals a set of steak knives or a chainsaw from your property. You aren't liable to that are you.

So if they pull you over and you have your own documentation showing "driving other cars" extension, then don't they accept that as proof?

If I was in that situtaion and I did have PROOF of insurance in my hand then I would be polite and not antagonistic, but I would take the officers details that they display and point out to them that I have valid insurance and they risk being sued for my losses when a judge accepts I am correctly insured.

If any of you watch road wars you would know that the police state " that a vehicle must have insurance in its own right", wether you have the driving others extension or not. if you get stopped you will get fined and 6 points on your license.
I used to be me !! what happened

We have already established why I've never been pulled over and that's because my car has always had insurance.

So you could get pulled over if the car didn't have insurance, but I would expect plod to look at and undertand the insurance certificate.
If they are traffic cops then surely they have come across DOC before?

I wouldn't personally expect it to be a huge risk if you have the proper documentation that I would expect traffic cops to recognise and be aware of this scenario.

Maybe I'll ask the chief of Road policing when I see him.

The Road Traffic Act states the following
143 Users of motor vehicles to be insured or secured against third-party risks

    (1) Subject to the provisions of this Part of this Act—
    (a) a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act, and
    (b) a person must not cause or permit any other person to use a motor vehicle on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that other person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act.

Note that it states that the USER needs insurance not the vehicle
