I just signed up broadband for the first time with talk talk. I have 2 PCs, in 2 different rooms. I want to know whether it is possible to use 2 computers at the same time or one at a time without the need of going wireless?

If they are in different rooms, then you have got to get the signal from a to b somehow.. Which means wireless, or wired, or transmitting the signal using the power line (mains) to transmit data, or moving the router or modem from a to b to use them one at a time.

Can you run a cable from a to b, if so get a wired router. Wireless is neater though.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
From what I know talk talk will send me a cable modem which only allows 1 PC connection. What other devices/cables do I need to make this a wired shared network? And where can I buy them. thanksSorry No Links in Signatures by Site Rules - MSE Forum Team 20

Good luck with TalkTalk, seriously I hope you don't ever need their help.
You should get sent a USB Modem. If you are wanting to to share the connection then you won't be using this. You need to buy a Wired/Wireless Broadband Router Modem. This is a device that replaces your current modem but also provides ports for connections to other PC's or an aerial for wireless connections. I can't think of many reasons why you wouldn't go for wireless than have cables all over the house.
There is a sticky topic on Wireless here0 -
Yeah good luck with talktalk they are a nightmare.
My personal choice is to use wires as there is a performance difference when trnsfering files over a wired network and a wireless network. The speed of interne access isnt really affected but there is a slight pause when using wireless this is due to using encryption somthing has to decrypt it.
Wired does have the disadvantage of cables but if they are done correctly then you shouldnt be able to notice them, lift the carpet and run them under the floorboards or staple them to the top of the skirting board having a cable that you only plug in when your using it it isnt a good idea as you wont want to keep un wrapping it and wrapping it back up neatly you will end up just wrapping it up rough and dumping it and it will look untidy.
The easiest option is wirelessbut there are slight performance issues. I have wireless for my laptop but I cabled the other pc that is upstairs from the router. It helped that we were having some plastering and decorating done at the time so the cable is done in the wall and unnoticable. if your local to me I can help you with it I have a few spare boxes of cable and when it cools down I dont mind cabling.0 -
Why do you not want to go wireless? It would be the simplest way if you have PC's in different rooms.0
