Tax Disc and Private Sale
Options
Hi Everybody,
Excuse me for what may be a very stupid question. I am selling a car which I had bought second hand while learning to drive. It now turns out that I am giving up driving after a couple of disastrous tests, and am going to sell the car privately. I have discovered that I hate driving, so please don't try to dissuade me on that issue, that's not the point of this post
I am very confused about road tax. The car I am going to sell is taxed until November. Now Directgov and other websites say that when I make a sale, I should remove the tax disc and claim a refund for the remaining part of the year. However, I also know that any road tax outstanding on a car is a selling point, and I wanted to offer the remaining tax to the buyer. So how does he make use of the road tax that is left if I have removed the disc? Does he get a new disc for the remaining paid-for time when the V5C is returned to DVLA? What is the exact process that should be followed if I want to let the buyer have the road tax to November.
Please help a numpty, as I am going around in circles on the Internet.

If there's a tax disc on the car, it will remain valid. A change of owner makes no difference.
Definitely a selling point to leave it there... also, the new driver could run into trouble getting from your house to a post office with all the documentation! Last time I bought a second-hand car, it was on a Saturday evening and I got pulled over for insurance checks by the police on my way home. Luckily, they let me off, saying "the seller should have sorted out the tax".Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
So, to clarify, you don't have to do anything. Just leave the disc where it is. You don't have to change any paperwork.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0
