Electric Metre Reading Confusion

Hi All,
Bit confused with my electric readings...I'll start from the beginning!
I moved into my house back in July last year, at that time the metres were both on prepay, and were both costing me £25 - £40 a month, with gas costing the slightly higher end.
I transfered them both over to pay monthly, and was paying £30 a month on electric (as advised by EDF) and paying the gas bill by bill. Well I've just had the gas bill, which was £160 for 2.5 months, I thought it was slightly high, but put it down to the weather. I thought, whilst I had the lady on the phone, to check my electric too - well luckily, as they had estimated it at 00500, and it was actually 04752, so quite a rise!!

I've been asked to take readings every day for the next 7 days, at the same time, as the lady now thinks there could be a problem with the metre, such as it isn't ticking over properly...what do you think?

I think someone has tapped into my supply, because there is no way I have used almost £500 on the electric in 2.5 months!! Considering, nothing has changed from when I was on prepay, paying £25 a month...any ideas?

There has surely got to be something wrong with the metre for it to have jumped quite that much in a short space of time? Has anybody has anything similar after having metres changed over, and if so, what was the cause?

It's either that, or EDF have suddenly put their prices up quite high :(

Thanks guys,
Kirsty :)

Is the estimate of 00500 the price in £'s or the actual reading? If its the actual reading then you need to submit your correct reading of 04752 and they will reinvoice you - will be a lower bill.

Can t really understand your query here (though it could be me!).

Edit: After rereading, think I understand now (doh!). Did you physically check your meter was at 00000 when it was first put in, when was it changed? What was the reading when you last paid? July to now a reading of 4752 sounds possible.

    Maybe I wasn't clear.
The reading of 00500 was their estimate, based on my usage of what it was when the metre was prepay. I told the lady the new reading, of 04752 and it's not lower..where did you get that from? It would go up from £30 pm to £140+ per month, (for electric alone, my gas is £65 a month) and even she thinks it's excessive in a 2 bedroom house, 1 adult, 1 child. She believes there to be a problem with the metre, so I wondered if anyone had had similar issues before.
  • As money maker has said, what was the start reading on the new meter when it was installed? They do not always start at 00000 as they sometimes use refurbished meters. They should have left a card attached to the meter giving the readings.
Does this reading tie up with the start reading on the bill or if no bill the start reading EDF have got?
