    Basically, fee-paying schools are for those parents with more money than sense.
    on that i disagree quite strongly. i don't think private schools are the be all and end all, far from it. but plenty offer support that just isn't available in the state sector everywhere. some have amazing sports or music or arts set ups, that might be perfect for some children. plenty of state schools have similarly excellent set ups, but not in every area. the choice to pay for school education is difficult, but it's not a unilaterally stupid decision. for some kids it might be the making of them. it's all about individual children and individual schools (state and private alternatives). i don't think you can make such a blanket statement.
