Hi :hello:
I'm wanting to get a little veggie patch up and running this year (for the first time)... can anyone give any advice on what is easiest to start off with?
I was hoping to be become quite self reliant with my veggies and herbies if poss
I'm a mega beginner so any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Carrots. Can't go wrong with carrots, in tubs (carrot fly stay close to the ground, so they don't know they're there
).
I've found runner beans to be easy, and tomatoes relatively so too.
What veg do you like to eat?If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

I don't know how much room you have, but if you can try a few different things then if some don't work you can look at the good stuff and not get discouraged.

I started last year and found potatoes to be the easiest thing i did! Buy some seed potatoes, chit them (google chitting), put 3/4 potatoes in a rubble sack on 5 inch of compost, cover with more compost and when the green foliage comes up add more compost (rolling up the edges of the bag the higher you get) until the bag is full (same applies if doing in the ground). When the folliage starts going yellow or after flowers die, have a rummage for all your lovely home grown tatties!!
Strawberries and blueberries pretty much look after themselves bar the watering in hot weather and can save good money on the shop bought ones!
Ditto the carrots, mine were small last year but nice!
Try whatever you like, but don't go too mad in your first year and do tons of different things or plant 30 tomato plants when one plant gives loads of toms....
Best thing is google things, look in library books, ask advise on here and be prepared to get hooked on this for life!!

I agree with the carrots we did these for the 1st time last year and got good results. Also did well with beetroot and radish. Also quick crop of salad leaves do well as long as your remember to keep picking them and watering them.

Salads and herbs are brilliant and so easy to grow. Toms are so much nicer than the shop bought but a bit more work. My kids adored the peas so we are growing loads more this year.
Ditto the carrots, my kids loved pulling up their own. Defo find a spot for some strawberries mmmmmmmm.
