Life Assurance - at what levels do insurers ask for medicals etc. ?

  • I think that if I were working near or in underwriting and someone asked, I'd tell them, or give a good hint. Don't know why people are so coy to be honest ?

If you worked in or near underwriting you'd understand why alarm bells ring if someone asks what the parameters are.

When I asked why you wanted to avoid a medical/GP report I wasn't implying you were doing anything wrong. You assumed I was. It's still not clear from your subsequent posts. Is it simply because you want to get a policy in force asap, or would you prefer not to answer extra questions/have a medical/have the insurer request a report from your doctor.

I was paid well, but I was not paid £9000 an hour (this job should take 30 minutes). .[/QUOTE]

    30 mins ???

to provide research and advice following a compliant process and taking the responsibility for the advice given over the term of that policy...

Sorry, I was being overly generous. It should say 15 minutes. It is execution only, not advice. I don't need advice on which policy or anyone to "hold my hand" through the forthcoming years.

I'd chuck the dog a bone if they could tell me the limits of automatic underwriting but this is not a job for an IFA.

I appreciate what you say were I to roll up at L&G and ask them over the counter or at their head office but here we are a collection of individuals, anonymous to a large degree and supposedly helping each other.

I do not want a medical though they can ask my GP what they want. I would prefer to avoid both. I have a time window when someone else will be in the UK and they need to be in the UK to sort this out. They will then leave the UK and after that, the opportunity has gone. Thus, as per the 1774 Life Assurance Act and relative to insurable interest, I need it done all by computers or rubber stampers etc.
  • You're right that we're here to help each other. I am anonymous and on this forum I don't represent the company I work for. But I'm more likely to help if you make it clear up front what your reasons are for asking your question. For all I knew, you were trying to avoid a medical etc because you didn't want the insurance company to know about something. I'm not going to give anyone advice or help to do that because it's people like me who have to deal with the consequences.

Have you asked the two potential insurers what their limits are?

I'm trying to work out if your job only exists because people take out insurance when they don't want a medical and if so, shouldn't you be assisting them so you are guaranteed more work ? :)

Seriously though, I am not sure where you get the "two potential insurers" from. I want to enact a policy with L&G and as premiums are 35% less doing so through Cavendish, that or a similar intermediary is my preferred method of doing so.

I have not asked L&G at what level they cease auto acceptance because they would likely not tell me whereas it would be of no concern for someone who worked at L&G to divulge that figure to an unknown inquirer.

My stab in the dark amount would be cover for the national average salary wrapped up in a lump sum (effective salary replacement for X years) over the average number of years. Add in some average mortgage coverage and I think sums around £250,000 will be auto approved. Will that extend to £500,000 ? If young then perhaps, at my age, perhaps not.

Ha ha! Good point...perhaps I should reconsider my stance on this ;)

I obviously misunderstood your posts, I thought it was L&G and A N Other. Why not try asking L&G direct? What can you lose? They can only say no.

How old are you and what level of cover are you thinking of applying for? Is it just life cover or are you adding in critical illness cover as well?

Can you expand on this? is either a life assured or applicant a non UK resident of overseas for more than six months of the year?
