How secure is MasterCard SecureCode?

I logged into my credit card account yesterday to find a fraudulent transaction - £400 to Barclays pre-paid.

I took it up with my card provider who have now blocked my account and will re-issue cards but they indicated that the mastercard securecode had been reset and used to carry out the transaction. I do use my card a lot on the internet, and quite a few merchants now use this as extra security, but I'm always pretty careful who I give my card details to and always make sure I get the proper greeting before entering my password on the securecode page.

Just wondered if anyone else had encountered anything similar?

I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

I've not encountered this myself but i'm sure i read about it on here before. Last year i think.
  • 3D Secure fails every time I use it. On each occasion I have to reset the password; I then record the password, complete the transaction and check that the password works by logging into my Verified by Visa account. Next time a transaction needs verification, I enter the new password and it fails, so I start again (I'm actually pretty good with passwords...).

It is so easy to change the password - all that is needed is the card validation number and expiry date, plus the user's date of birth. Anyone who handles the card in the course of a transaction can easily lift the first 2 items. Anyone who has a Facebook page or blogs or twitters probably advertises the last the the world at large. The whole system is about as secure as a chocolate padlock.

But just try to find someone to complain to!
