Are we being robbed with our electric
Options
We are currently being charged 22p per kilowat by our landlord on a token meter card which can only be purchased from the landloard. we are 1 of 8 1 bed appartments all on seperat meters. which come off a main central meter. We tried to contact british gas who are the suppliers but couldnt answer any of our questions because she is the account holder for the premises. We contacted energ watch who only sent out loads of jargon if your the account holder. We are using on average £17 per week this does not include gas. how can we find out if were being charged too much.... thank you

If the landlord will not show you original bills that justify the charge contact the charity Shelter. They are the most likely to have the experts who can get to the bottom of it.

As the apartments all elec or do you have gas for heating, cooking?

Agree, ask the landlord for a copy of a recent bill. If they are making a profit they are breaking the law.
Presume the Landlord is allowed to include an administration charge though to cover the cost of his/her meters / maintenance? It would be vital to know this before accusing him/her of profiteering.0 -
thanx for the quick reply, would you know the standard rate for commercial or private....0

Any such charges should be included in the rent. There should not be an unlimited drain on every unit of the metered fuels.0 -
It sounds like you are on a sub meter there as you can only buy meter cards from the landlord. British Gas most probably won't talk to you as they are only aware of one main meter which is the landlords supply from that he has put on sub meters which are nothing to do with the supplier. Ofgem do regulate the maximum that the landlord can charge you for the reselling of electricity which if you do a search for Ofgem Resale of Gas & electricity, MRP Regulation 20030
