Microsoft Word/Office 2007 for Windows 7

Hi,
I'm not hugely computer literate, so please bear with me
We recently bought a new PC with Windows 7 on but all our previous word documents wouldn't open unless you used the free trial of Office 2007. And, unless I'm doing something wrong, I couldn't find a way to open a new basic notebook or new word document without using the Office 2007 trial.
Trial is coming to an end but buying Office 2007 is going to cost too much for us. Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative we could use that would still enable us to use basic functions (like letters or notepads)?

Do you still have the disk for your old version of office? If so uninstall the trial version from your new computer and install the old version.
Otherwise, you could try any of the alternatives mentioned, and I'll suggest AbiWord as well, which I think is better if you're just looking for a lightweight word processor rather than a full office suite.0 -
Wow! Thanks for all the speedy and in-depth replies. I need to look into all the options given so far but a quick glance at them and they all look good - and best of all, free!
Thanks again to you all.DFW Nerd 941 Proud to be dealing with my debt

No, we don't stll have a disk for an old version. I like the look of Abiword at first glance as it is only a lightweight word processor usage I need. Thanks.DFW Nerd 941 Proud to be dealing with my debt
