Asking LL for additional weeks to move out.

Options
Is it unreasonable to ask a LL for an extra few weeks past the date due to move out, while waiting for new property to become available for move?

I know there is no-one due to move into current property, as current LL is putting it up for sale and has asked to have it vacant so he can refresh it.

There is no harm in asking but you need to be aware that it has consequences. You also have the legal right to stay until a court orders your eviction if you wish to go down that route and the potential hassle factor of this could be used in your negotiations.

However, legally you can only stay for an extra rental period (1 month if that is the frequency that you pay rent) so a few weeks may be difficult (or the LL can look the other way). You will need to pay rent for this period.
  • I spoke to one of the LL's company representatives and said I would be paying additional rent for the period, so he said to put it in writing... I'm just wondering am I being reasonable. I'm hoping it'll just be a week.

The other property is due to vacate a week after us.... so I'm thinking it's still additional rent for them..

There is nothing unreasonable about asking so long as you also accept that the LL would not be being unreasonable if they say no or say that you have to pay rent for an entire extra month. I suspect their response will depend on how reasonable and good a T you have been throughout the tenancy.
  • Was in the same situation spoke with LL first to okay and agree price for 1 week (offered £200 as was paying £725 month)then wrote to LA confriming delay in moving and extra rent) neither had a problem. They never chased for £200 but handed payment in with the keys.

Sorry to jump on this thread but I have a related question.

When you give notice to move out of a rented property, does it notice HAVE to end on the rent day (i.e. my rent day is 9th so do I have to move out on the 8th?) or can I give notice til 16th as long as they receive it by the 9th of the previous month?

    Thanks

Unless agreed otherwise with a LL notice must end on the last day of a rental period. The rent due date is irrelevent (although alot of posters on these boards make this mistake).

If your payment frequency is monthly then your rental period will run monthly from the day your tenancy started.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I have just checked and my rent date is the same as the rental period date. So, as my rent period is 9th - 8th, do I move out on the 8th or the 9th?

    Thanks

The two dates often (normally) coincide but they do not have to.

In your case the 8th is the last day of your tenancy so you need to move out on the 8th.

Thanks better get my letter of notice written :)
  • well heard off the LL and ok to have 2 weeks additional (though if flat i want is cleared i'll be in by end of my tenancy) but they've asked for 2 weeks rent upfront? i'm not happy about that as I might be out and then they'll be holding over £1500 of my pounds (inc deposit)

also they said they'll inspect my property and if all ok, i'll get my deposit back, however, I dont' have a signed inventory, the place is clean just basic wear and tear... so do they have a leg to stand on about my deposit?
