Buying train tickets

Somehow I got to my age without knowing that if you step away from the ticket office without checking your tickets the supplier has no obligation to refund the money spent if they give you the wrong ones. I'm sure you are all a bit more savvy, but I am fuming.

I went to the station and ordered the tickets after lengthy discussion with the guy and he sold me tickets for the wrong day. It was his mistake and SWT offered to investigate. They took a month to reply and offered vouchers, referring to the passenger's charter. I have since met a few other people who had the same experience. I think if there is such a risk of error they should have a sign off procedure and a big sign on the counter saying, take your time, we often mess up and you will lose out if you don't check the tickets right now. I think it's a licence to print money for them. Anyone else agree or know of a campaigning group?
