How to turn off hot water supply

Hi guys, I was hoping there's someone on here whow can advise...

I am trying to replace the taps in my kitchen as the teeth have gone and they spin.

I know how to turn the cold water off at the stopcock but need to check I am doing the hot water bit right.

We have a copper cylinder upstairs. The hot water to the taps comes from the top of this right? There is no stop tap between the top of cylinder and the kitchen tap (that I can see). There is a tap up above the cylinder which may be for the cold water feed into it. If I was to turn this off would this work?

Would I need wait until the cylinder drains or because no water is able to enter at the bottom would no water be able to be pushed out of the top?

Thanks,
Very confused :(

Yes that will close the feed to the hot water cylinder and as you have worked out the hot cylinder will remain full without emptying, then turn a hot water tap on at the lowest point, for instance in the kitchen, to drain any water out of the pipes.

Yep! cajef has got it sussed. Close the feed to the hot tank, open the hot taps and wait for the water to stop coming out of them. The cold feed to the hot tank will normally go into the bottom of the tank, but the stop valve could be anywhere local in the feed pipe. As you say, you appear to have a valve above the tank.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

a lot of older systems never had a stop tap in the hot water supply pipes. a safety measure or money saving, im never too sure?
just turn off the cold supply and drain the hot/cold taps.
its good practice to switch off the boiler and the immersion too.
    Get some gorm.
