I,m posting on behalf of my mumwho is a pensioner...
She had a car insured with direct line. The insurnace ran whilst they were away. The policy was a automatic renewal unless requested otherwise. So the policy was renewed by Directline automatically.BUT the car was to be scrapped due to age as the MOT neared. When she rang up to cancle the policy with 7months remaining she was told to send in the policy but they would not refund her the remaining 7 months.DirectLine also tried to charge £31 admin fee but wavered that after a debate...
Can they retain the remaining 7 months?
This seems unfair although i am not sure of what the contract was with DirectLine

They can do this. If you cancel motor insurance part way through it is rare that you get anything back, certainly not the whole proportion of it.
While it seems unfair, it is common practice and legal.
