Nationwide rearranging payments - charges?

Hi all

Need some advice on Nationwide's unauthorised overdraft policy....

Situation is - my main account is with First Direct, but I work in Germany at the minute so I have a Nationwide account too to avoid charges. Up until last week I have only had a cash card for this account.

I was in the UK for a week and a half for a course so needed no money in the NW account, so I left it at £0

I flew back to Germany on Sunday afternoon. On sunday morning I made a £100 faster payments transfer into the NW account from FD, which showed up straight away. When I landed I withdrew €70 which showed as an unavailable balance for 2 days and then taken from the balance.

This was the first time I had used the debit card abroad - before this I have only had the cash card. The withdrawal was backdated to Sunday, and put before my faster payment transfer so that it shows I went into overdraft (this never happened with the cash card, even when I had made the transfer on the same day. Something for me to remember with the Visa debit card now)

Does anyone know if I will be charged....? I know A&L do this but some other banks operate on an end of day policy...

Sorry for long post, wanted to get all details in...

I can't answer your post for sure, but I seem to remember that we had similar thing with Nationwide, when the withdrawals/payments were put before incoming money, and there was negative balance - although at the end of the day, it was in a considerable plus. We have never been charged for this. We don't have Faster Payments with Nationwide (wrong sort code...), so don't know if that is an issue.

  • But he did have the money. He paid in on the Sunday morning, and withdrew on the Sunday afternoon.
