Bigger Letter Box
Options

My letter box is really really tiny and although our postman tends to leave things under the doormat or under the side gate etc it would be nice to have CD orders and magazines through the letter box!
The door is a large solid wooden affair probably been there for decades. I guess the options are:
Any thoughts appreciated

The door is a large solid wooden affair probably been there for decades. I guess the options are:
- Widen the letter box: How can I find someone to do this? Is it even possible?
- Buy a new door: Sounds expensive and hassle with all the locks and stuff
- Buy a lockable delivery box: Does anyone use these? Do they work, do the postman use them?
Any thoughts appreciated

to widen the letterbox ,all you are doing is cutting a hole bigger
so its not beyond most DIYers unless the door is an akward design0 -
Hi SunnieSuzie
I don't have a letterbox (my front door is a patio sliding door) and have a post box on the wall. Never had any problems with the postman using it, the only thing I would say is get a tall one so the only way the post can be removed is by unlocking it, i.e. make sure nothing can be taken out by putting hand through the flap. I got mine from B&Q and took some letters with me and posted them through to make sure.0 -
Its not just about widening the letterbox. You also need to get a new letter plate to fit. By the time you have bought a letter plate and got someone to make the hole bigger, you have exceeded the cost of your option three. I have a letter delivery box and the postman / couriers use it all the time.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Having just read the email regarding cheap dvd rentals, I've been spurred to do something about my letterbox too as dvd can't fit in it at the moment. Think I'll get a handyman in to fit a new one - doesn't look a big job to widen it and fit a new one.0

I live in a block built in the late 1800's & they must have had smaller envelopes then, because you could barely fit a DL size through the original tiny letterboxes
the door is thick solid wood so I got my friend who's a joiner to fit a new one & now anything other than oversize books & large DVD boxsets can be delivered without the postie having to stop & knock or leave a card0 -
ive got an american style post box on the wall next to my front door.
my front door is solid wood with no holes at all.Get some gorm.0
