The last place I rented had an fairly old combi it wasn't that old. It was amazing much better than electrical shower we have now. It also saved us a lot on the eleci bill.
  • I have a mira mixer shower and combi. There is only 2 of us so it is fine. Just make sure you haven't got washing machine going or anything before you start. I think our problem is with the poor pressure though, we still have the old lead pipe in as someone as already said.

To put this in context, electric showers are usually 8-9kW. They give a reasonable stream of hot water, a bit meagre but usable.

A decent size combi boiler is 20-30kW, and it will give priority to hot water over heating. So, it will provide roughly 3 times as much hot water as one of those electric showers. Obviously, if someone turns on all the hot taps at the same time as you are having a shower, you won't get much hot water in your shower, but otherwise you'll be fine.

If you find out the make and model of boiler it should be easy to find the output.

Oh, by the way, the amount of hot water you get depends on the water temperature entering the house.

The thing I don't like is the heating gets turned off whilst the hot water is running so you get out of the shower and your towel isnt nice and warm on the radiator.

Our shower has had to be on maximum hot since the cold weather started and some days I would like it hotter.

I much prefer a power pumped shower or a pressurised hot tank.

We have a pressurised hot tank. We never run out of hot water, but the shower goes colder if someone turns on the hot tap in the bathroom.

With most Combi boilers there can be a drop in the flow rate if another tap is turned on.

But if the mixer valve on the shower is thermostatically controlled it will not affect the water temperature.

Wih mixers you get what you pay for.

This is what we installed in our house and it's brilliant, no waste of hot water and doesn't go cold when a hot tap is turned on! Very slight power reduction when say the washing machine is on, but still much stronger than many showers I've used.

    too many comps..not enough time!

Some showers that run off combi boilers for the hot water require a flow balance control unit which basically slows the flow of the cold water before it gets to the mixer thermostat. Otherwise the thermostat has to do a lot more work and will break quite quickly.

How long do you spend having a shower if the radiator and towels get cold?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
