problems with internet connection

We have been having problems connecting both wirelessly and wired to the internet. We ahve had a bloke out to try and sort it but even he is lossing the will to live. We have virgin. We have replaced the belkin router as it was faulty for a new belkin router. |Replaced the desktop pc as it was 7 yrs old for a new laptop. The new laptop was connecting wirelessly to the router but only in the study where the router is. It says we have a wireless connection which is excellent elsewhere in the house but won't connect. My sons laptop is the same as is the xbox wireless connection is found excellent but it won't coonect. This laptop won't connect either despite being next to the router. All the laptops connect without a problem back at the home of the guy who is trying to sort all this out.
However after trying a different router yesterday here at home despite all 3 laptops being next to the router the connections would just disappear. We have had wireless before without any problem it all went pear shape when the norton antivirus softwear expired.
However we now have no internet access on the new laptop will not connect either wired or wireless. It says we have a wirelss connection but nothing. My laptop is not working wirelessly but is wired into router and working. Even plugging the new laptop into the cable modem maes no difference. Again the new laptop has stop any internet access since the guy yesterday downloaded new security sotware.
we are all lossing the will to live with it. Its a newbuild house with paper thin walls had wireless access previously but now despite saying on all the laptops and xbox have wireless connection they won't connect. Any thoughts on why please.

  • Lets see what all your network adapters are doing.

Press the windows key on keyboard and R, this should bring up the run box, type cmd and hit ok. Black command box appears, type, ipconfig /all

This will give info of your adapters, right click on box and copy, then paste the info here and we will see where we go from there.

We have 3 laptops an acer(new) not working wired or wireless but was working wirelessly until yesterday. The settings are wrong on this as I rang. virgin this am. Yesterday the bloke who has been trying to fix every thing changed the setting so think that is the problem there, he is returning today. The other 2 laptops mine HP which is working wired into the router only. It says that I have a wireless connections are available mine and the neighbours! But will not make a wireless connection even next to the router. This laptop has been restored to factory setting back at the home of the guy who is trying to get us up and running. It connected no problem at his home. His own laptop won't connect to our wireless router either. DS laptop will connect to the wireless in the study next to the router but nowhere else. all the computers say our network is up and running with excellent connection. But they won't connect. It is a new belkin router the previous one was faulty. But we have tried with a netgear yeaderday and the connection next to the router was hit and miss. If one computer was connected the other 2 weren't. as for the xbox upstairs it says it is connected to wireless but nothing. We have thought of interferance ie cordless phones etc but nothing changes. The house is detached and we are an end house. No thick walls just studwork. What could be stopping the connections. I am really fed up so is DH and the guy trying to fix it all is slowly losing his hair and will to live! It all started playing up when our norton anti virus expired ie my laptop loss wireless connection and then wire same as my son. As far as we can work out its not the laptops as they connect away from us. Not the router as we have replaced it and tried another with the same problem. and the virgin cable modem is ok I rang the today. so somethig ? what is preventing us to have a connection beyond the study despite the connection being excellent. Going mad with frustration!!

Turn off encryption on the router, then connect, see if it issues you with a 192 address in ipconfig.

Change wireless channels on the router
    !!
    > . !!!! ----> .
  • When you say wont connect, do you mean wont connect to network or internet ?

You can see the wireless network ?

If you can see your network, what happens when you try to connect (whats messages do you get) ?

Can you try one thing for me, when you say the wireless is connect with excellent signal are you getting an ip address if so what is it.

    It should read something like

    192.168.0.2 - IP Address
    255.255.255.0 - Subnet
    192.168.0.1 - Gateway

Just trying to fully understand where you are issue wise.
