Embarrassingly simple question about ethernet cable

Personally I'd put a battery over a pair of wires, and go to the other side and put an LED over the same pair until you find the working ethernet cable.
Ethernet cable testing, MSE style.:D

If you are used to this sort of stuff and pop around to a mate and have the problem dropped on you with only an LED and a battery to hand, fair enough. But for a newbie to this sort of thing, the polarity issue is one which is best avoided.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0

If you have numerous RJ45 connectors and enough slack to play with then why not just crimp up all the ends and experiment. Surely easier than messing around with meters!0

Seems simplest solution to me, presumably you are going to terminate them with a rj45 socket anyway, and you can then convert the phone point with a rj45 to bt adapter, costing £2 or £3!!

You make rotating an LED 180 degrees to correct the polarity sound hard. :rotfl:Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I think I've been doing this all wrong.
I thought I could take 3 cables from the cat6 patch panel to the wall outlet in the bedroom and put 2 jacks on for the ethernet and 1 phone jack.
I've just downloaded an info sheet from a website and it says I need a voice panel and need to link the phone wall outlet to that.
Am I doing this all wrong? I've got the ethernet side sorted, it's just the phone side I'm struggling with.Herman - MP for all!0 -

For the telephony, you simply need to pick one pair e.g. Orange-White/Orange and wire this to terminals 2 & 5 at both ends.
Master 2..........Orange....................Extension 2
Master 5..........White/Orange...........Extension 5:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

But it's where one of these ends should go that I'm confused about.DVardysShadow wrote: »What were you going to do with your phone cable? Chances are you have no real problem. I think you have just picked up a datasheet which assumes you are wiring business premises.
I wanted a phone socket in two of the bedrooms (for Sky purposes rather than making telephone calls).
I've got a new modem router and also a new gig switch. I've also got a patch panel.
I thought I could connect every length of cat6 from each room, into the patch panel, then from the patch panel to the switch. I know I can get a phone jack module for the bedroom wallplate but it's the other end I'm confused about. I thought it went in the patch panel too but now I think it doesn't. *where's that confused smilie when you need it*
Is this what I need for a phone line too? It has 4 data sockets and 4 phone.
Trouble is, I need 16 ethernet so that's no good and anything with more phone sockets comes as a 16 port voice panel which is overkill for what I need.Herman - MP for all!0
