gym membership

k i signed upto a 12 month contract at a gym last september and on the websiteit said that if i ever wanted to cancel my membership just send a letter to the gym and my bank statin i wanted to leave,
now iv found another, better gym for the same price i want to cancel my contract and start 1 there but the website no longer says anything about canceling??? iv rung them up and they said i would have to carry on until september or possibly pay my outstanding fee if i cancelled the direct debit and i have been given a number to ring but there closed at min.
im only young i just wanna train!!! lol
