Why do people get married?

Personally it's because I have actually found a specimin of the male gender with whom I would like to spend my life with.
I understand though that some peeps marry because they might be (how do I put this politely?) arranged into it like MBFGW, to further a career even?, because it's the best of a bad lot?, conveinient?, happy? OMG ILU so much?
Just seeing stuff like Mr & Mrs Cole makes you think !!!!!!? but then maybe jealousy plays it's part as well.
I have no idea really, I just wondered if anyone else had any thoughts/reasons?
PS
I don't mean to be controversial, so if I've put my foot in the brown stuff I appologise but things are just black or white to me

I'm getting married so if he's in a coma I can make the medical decisions, we don[t have to rely on his parents which seems ridiculous to me.
I just feel like, at the moment, I have no legal standing even though he's been my partner and best friend for over 6 yearsKavanne

I want to be his wife. Im fed up of people thinking that because Im his girlfriend that we're not serious. I've had people say 'oh, well you are only boyfriend and girlfriend. Its not like its serious' YES IT BLOODY WELL IS.
Whenever I ring ANYONE to do with him (doctors, dentist, phone company) to sort things out they wont talk to me, as soon as I say Im his wife they talk to me! GrrrrGreen and White Barmy Army!0 -
For us, there are three reasons;
firstly we want to make a commitment to each other,
secondly we want the chance to celebrate our relatioship with our family and friends (this may not seem that important to others, but being a gay couple it is important to us-things have come a long way in the last 20 years since I 'came out'!)
and thirdly so that we become each others next of kin, if anything happens - illness or god forbid, death, we have legal rights."Normal is not something to aspire to - it is something to get away from" - Jodie Foster0 -
1 - i didn't like me surname, and his was better
2 - got to wear a nice frock
3 - i love receiving presents
4 - he promised me a caribbean cruise for my honeymooon
5 - i get to keep his pension, and his insurance policy should anything go wrong, and not his mother
6 - i went from being the ag, at the end of wag to the wa bit
well no 1-5 are not true but 6 is
i married because i love him, still do, and i love sharing his name (mine wasn't that bad though)
he is the 1st man i have felt i can trust 100%, and many years on i still do
i enjoy growing old with him, although i'm only 43, he makes me laugh, and every wednesday he brings me a present, sometimes it's a tiny one like a bar of chocolate, sometimes it's a nice top he's seen. we do things together, we do things with our friends, and also individually, like he is going to the races for 3 days with his friends, and i'm going to turkey for 10 days with the girls.
as for mrs cole, well what can i say, apart from the fact that i'm so glad she has chosen to leave him, after the 1st time he strayed i would have kicked him out, but she chose to try and make her marriage work, and i admire her for that, as she had to do it in the public eye, but after the past 2 weeks of press, i'm just glad that she has seen the way, and chucked the cheating piece of scum. As for mrs terry well how can she have any respect for herself, to take mr terry back, and end up doing those lovely dovey pics in dubia.
I love my hubby xxxxx0 -
Well Saint Chris, Dubai says it all lol :rotfl:
I can't back the NOK stuff more than you have already, so a big TY to ev1 about that.
I did once know of a man who had a stomach ulcer which burst. The wife ( soon to be ex) turned up as did the current girlfriend and as soon as the wife said "I don't want her here" That was it for GF even tho they lived together.
I thought "How shinola is that"!Karma - the consequences of ones acts."It's OK to falter otherwise how will you know what success feels like?"1 debt v 100 days £20000 -
We're getting married because we love each other and put each other first.
I can't wait to be OH's "wife" rather than girlfriend/fiancee/partner. TBH I'm almost more excited about being Mrs S than the day itself! Also we want kids and want us all to have the same surname (I know there's no need for it, its just what we want) I also agree with the whole medical thing too, I hate the fact that legally my dad has more say over what could happen to me than my H2B.
And because we got engaged after 3 1/2 months I lost 3 of my 4 best friends as they thought it was too quick so 3 years after getting engaged we'll say our vows and show the non-believers too!!:p (which is a nice addition to the reasons above!)
As for Cheryl Cole I'm so pleased she has finally told him where to go, we don't know whats gone off behind closed doors but she seems to have been doing all the work to get the marriage back on track. While he makes things worse!Getting hitched! 23/10/10!! :T

This exact situation happened to me and my H2B. He suffered a severe brain injury, and ended up in ITU in a coma and had to undergo emergency neurosurgery. Initially I was involved in discussions, but this quickly tailed off, and I was finding out about meetings with consultants after they had happened. This is despite the fact that me and H2B (although we werent engaged at the time) were practically living together, and I was the only person to visit him every single day when he was in hospital. There was an issue about his neuro-rehab and his parents wanted to move him 500 miles away, although the hospital disagreed, so that didnt happen. He wasnt in a fit state to recognise what was happening and I still think he doesnt really understand how his family made me feel. Although this was 2.5 years ago, and he is doing fantastically well (his consultant told him he was a medical miracle!), it still really hurts me to the core that his family did not take my thoughts and feelings into account, and I don't think I will ever be able to truely forgive them for that.
I am getting married first and formostly to make a firm commitment to my H2B that I love him more than life, and I want to spend the rest of my life with him, but the NOK etc stuff is also a part of it too.0 -
I just want a big party and to be centre of attention for the day!
Only joking. I love him to bits and know i want to spend the rest of my life with him. We've been living together for 5 years and if anything happened to him i don't know what i'd do. Would also be quite nice for our children to be legitimate - I've got a different surname to my son and daughter and HATE it.0
