Flying with a 7 month old baby - first time!

Options
I'm flying with Ryanair next week with my 7 month old grandson and his parents. I've not flown with a baby before - does anyone have any advice to make the trip more comfortable for all of us. I know Ryanair board families first, but any tips would be appreciated.

Hello, We travelled to Majorca with our daughter when she was 8 months old. One tip is to ask for a pillow before takeoff to rest babies head on. During takeoff and landing we gave our daughter water to drink as it helps equalise the pressure in the ears. Here is a web link you may find useful.http://www.babygoes2.com/main_planit.asp#packing

    Hope this helps.

I might be wrong but I think that Ryanair dont allocate seats - i.e. its like a bus - you sit where you want. Having an infant will mean you cant sit in the emergency exit seats, however what you can do is one of you sit in the window and the other in the aisle. Unless the plane is full its unlikely that someone will ask to sit between you, and this will give you a little extra room to make your grandson more comfortable. We did this on easyjet with my 10 month old, and on the flight back the steward told us the plane was only half full so we could do the same if we wanted.
Make sure you take some small toys to amuse him - maybe buy a few new ones so that they are new to him - this will pass some time. Try and take some snack type foods that he will eat - will also pass some time.

Just try and keep to as near a normal routine as possible. Their favourite drink when taking off and landing helps and a walk up and down the aisle - our children loved to look around and get all that attention when babies!

hi, like above we travelled to lanzarote with our 9month son, last november.
We asked for a pillow also and a blanket, gave him his juice and read all the inflight rubbish they give you to keep him entertained during take off.
Once we were inflight luckily he fell asleep so during meal times we just switched places for each of us to get fed.
Simples things when he woke up was to let him listen to the music on the headphones and maybe take his favoutrie toy or one he hasn't seen for a while as it'll be like a new one to him.

We're doing it all again this novemember, only one year older:rotfl:

Best of luck for next week.
  • Hi we went to ibiza with my 11 month old son. We kept him sat on my lap the whole time - sort of started as we meant to go on.

We took some toys he hadnt seen so they was new an exciting, a few books to read to him - he loves story time !

Little snacks, bottles of juice and i also took readymade formula cartoons. I took a blanket a when i gave him his bottle i put the blanket over him and he weant to sleep.

I was so worried we went abroad twice that month and had no bother either times, so many people commented on how well behaved he was - i was so proud !

    Have a lovely time x

We flew with our 3 1/2 month old baby, and everything went very well indeed. And we're doing it again when she's 12 months old.

I support everything everyone else has said - feeding water/milk whilst taking off is great to avoid ear pressure upset, and the main thing is to keep them entertained/hope they go to sleep.

    An extra seat really helps.

Depending how much you are paying for the flights, STRONGLY consider booking three seats not two. We paid for 2 seats with bmibaby and fell for the "babies fly free" stuff, but would actually have saved money (on excess baggage charges) if we'd booked 3 seats each way, and we'd also have had the extra space on the plane. I'm not sure whether all airlines will let you book a seat for a baby, though, but I don't see why not.

Yes all airlines let you pay for an extra seat. and if you have the correct type of car seat you can use that to secure them for take off and landing.

I would also agree with all of the above, we flew when our daughter was 9 months old and have been often since with two of them, they love it now 5 and 4.

I flew with my daughter when she was 7 months old. She screamed all the way to Spain due to the pain in her ears. I would give a precautionary dose of Calpol about 30 mins before flying. I alway do it now and she is 8. She also wears airplanes for kids (ear plugs that equalize the pressure in the ear).

    Good Luck.

we flew when my youngest was 6 months old ( then again at 10 months and 22 months)

he was fine,we kept him awake before the flight so that he would sleep ,and he did most of the way there

agree with above ,make sure they have something to suck on take off / landing, some snacks ,fave toy / comforter ,drinks etc

keep the buggy til you board as then you wont have to carry him (most airlines allow you to do this i think ? bmi baby did with us )

have a lovely time im sure he will be fine :)

Thanks for that info. What's the "correct" type of seat?
