In my experience it is, but for the sake of your sanity, do not go near A&L, ever, for anything.0

Are they really that bad? I applied last night and got the confirmation this morning. I only want to deposit my money and withdraw when required, no direct debits to set up or anything.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

They are fine as long as your carefull, people just like to jump on bandwagons here and go looking for faults. If you want to be a true MSE follower then avoid abbey/AL like the plague and get a First direct account....0 -

Or perhaps, generally speaking, more people post about A&L's failings than any other bank on the board. Add to that the fact Santander (Abbey) bottom out in customer service polls, where as First Direct are always one of the best.
How often do you Google "Abbey customer service", and find the second link (below Santander) is a website dedicated to their customer service failings.
Below is an example of complaint dealt with by the Guardian:-

In all honestly I have had only one problem with them, which was an error their end.
I did it throough Quidco, I opened the premier account, and after 3 months downgraded it to normal current account, as Ididn't want to pay for the account.
I had no problems, quickly done online, couple of days later confirmation, have a chq book, basic debit card. If I transferred money and all debits etc, then I could of had guarentee card,OD, apply for credit card, but just needed a spare account.
xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

Just join them for the £100 and then leave. That's what everyone else does.
Let's face it... Any bank offering £100 and an interest free overdraft for a year must be desperate for customers. One asks oneself. Why?0 -

How long after opening the account can you leave please , and do you e mail or calll them ? Thanks0 -
I think it is 3 months.
Then if you leave it another 3 months after closure you can pull the scam again and get another ton returning as a "new" customer!!!
I am surprised they havn't cottoned on to people doing it and withdrawn the offer by now. I think the people that sit it out with them are those that spend all their time living in an overdraft as it is 0% for a year.
Think you can probably close the account in a branch.0
