EXTRA TICKETS AVAILABLE - PLEASE SEE BELOW

The government recently announced personal finance will become a compulsory part of the Personal, Health, Social & Economic (PHSE) curriculum in primary and secondary schools from 2011 (see the MSE News story Personal finance education to be made compulsory for more info).

To help teachers figure out how to include finance into their teaching the Department for Children Schools and Families is running a conference called 'Pocket Money to Pensions' on Wed 24 Mar in London. The conference will also be turned into a dvd for all teachers and schools not able to attend.

As Martin's been campaigning about financial education for years, he was invited in to the Department for Children over the new curriculum (see Meeting Ed Balls blog) and his Teen Cash Class is going to form a teaching element of it. He will also be speaking and the conference and attempting to teach a class of teens in front of a live audience (brave!)

Twenty Tickets for MoneySaving Teachers

As part of this we've managed to bag 20 places for MoneySaving Teachers. All we ask is that you get permission to have the day out of school before getting in touch, and that this is only taken by teachers to whom it will be a relevant part of their work. :)

[title=http://images2.moneysavingexpert.com/images/dp/wtd_underline.gif]wtd_icon.gif How to apply for a ticket[/title]
We've had an extra allocation of tickets for the conference so please email info@pfeg.org or telephone 020 7330 9470 if you'd like to attend.

There is a budget available for supply cover if you require this (up to £180 per teacher) and £75 for travel (a claim form needing receipts will be available on the day of the conference). Full details on claiming the cover and travel will be in the invitation from pfeg. See our travel guide for ways to get cheap tickets if needed http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-train-tickets :)

  • Hi,

This is a great Idea and as a trainee Maths teacher I have been trying to incorporate some of this into my lessons. Can we happly for tickets (from our ac.uk email address) or do we have to wait??

And will we be able to receive the DVD mentioned as I know several in my class would love to incorporate this aspect into their classes as it makes it more student friendly.

    Thanks

    Jody

  • Does this exclude Welsh teachers, who may be thinking of applying for posts in England?

    Hi All

This sounds like the kind of meeting that I want to be involved in. (plus a great networking opp) As part of my Citizens Advice job role I visit schools and introduce financial capability training and I would love to get together with a group of teachers to find out what the new cirriculum could look like.
However, if I am unable to attend this event on the "free ticket" then perhaps I could meet up with someone that does and get some feedback so as to prepare for future school sessions.

Hi folks - we're not in control of the event and just have our allocation of 20 tickets. So for attending otherwise i can't help. As for welsh teachers - I think that is ok put your app in.

CAB adviser i have deleted the email address you included in your post - never good to have addresses on a public forum

  • I am really really pleased to see that this conference is going ahead. For ages I have been concerned as we all have about this issue. No one would take me seriously for some time. Martin you are doing a fantastic job.

I recently phoned the TDA to look at teaching. I am an FCCA ( Chartered certified accountant) I was told I couldn't teach because I don't have BA degree. A letter from the ACCA says I have a Masters but because I studied at the school of life and not at a university, I have to go and get a degree or become a teaching assistant.

I have lectured in finance but despite my skills and obvious qualifications I can't teach. I have spoken to my MP, he says they want the best. So why are existing teachers who may not be qualified to teach this subject being asked to just include this in their already over stretched lessons. Surely this is important enough to this country to have a team of finance people who know how to teach and can hit the ground running to go around school and deliver a proper course and on going support to the children and parents.

I will be looking for my next job in industry as a result of this insulting time at the hands of my MP's

    yep...

I have prof qualifications, and my local uni suggested a masters was more appropriate, but I am completing a BA Hons first/instead to be able to move on to teaching.
