Tesco DVD FREE Trial - check account for small debits

I recently registered for Tesco DVD rental service and its 14 day free trial.
Two days later, I was checking my bank account online and found two £1.00 debits from my account.
I have contacted Tesco and thet are denying all knowledge of the debits. Is this theft?
Anyone else bewarned as if they are doing this with all new customers, it will soon amount to quite a few pounds.

Hi Chris - interesting first post. First up it's very quick to have checked 2 days later and the debits had already processed and shown on your account as any Direct Debits are usually called for a few days in advance of them actually coming through so I don't expect it is capable of being due to the DVD trial if the dates you suggest are correct.
Do you have details of who the debits are to - usually there will be reference numbers and a name as to who has taken the money. Have you also checked if the Tesco DVD rental is setup as a new instruction on your bank account. If it hasn't, they can't be the culprit.
Also did you not consider enquiring direct with your bank before contacting Tesco - if it was a Direct Debit unexpected then under the terms of the DD guarantee it would be refunded by your bank and then they would take on the investigation.
All in all, seems a bit of a fishy post with many questions before badmouthing Tesco. And no, I don't work for them but wouldn't want people to read the post innocently and be put off joining a trial for free without having some facts.0 -
It wasn't a direct debit that was set up as I am awre this approximately three days for these payments once requested.
They requested for my Meastro card details and yes I have checked my statement it is listed as TESCODVDREN.0 -

Are you sure that one is not a credit refunding the debit?
I only ask because I read somewhere that Tesco's have done this before to validate the card details are correct:)"Sealed Pot challenge" member No. 138

Yea, checked and both are debits. I can appreciate them doing that to check my card but two debits and to deny all knowledge is a different matter.0
