04 mondeo oil light prob

Options
Hubbys mondeo estate has developed a problem abroad :(

The oil light came on so he took it in to a kwik fit type place and had an oil change and filter (needed doing anyway). The light went out but within a couple of mins came on again.

Anyone any ideas whether it could be just an electrical fault or something more serious? We are wondering whether it would be safer to have it towed for 100 euros rather than drive it to the nearest Ford garage in case its the oil pump. Garage is about 12km away.

There is no leak so the level is still fine.

It could be a problem with the oil pump.
  • the oil light illuminates when the pump fails to pick up any oil to circulate around the engine. Its sort a last minute warning before the engine dies. If its just had a change of oil and there's no big leaks, id say the pump is on its way out. If it were me, id have it towed, otherwise youre looking at a new engine
  • oil sensor. Common on that engine.

seems strange that the light went off after the oil change but then came on again.

Someone else said you can see the oil moving if the pump is ok if you start the engine and take the filling cap off?

Hubby also tells me that the temperature gauge also now seems to have stopped working too...

If its just the sensor, is it a big/costly/time consuming job?
  • Not really. :)

i doubt if it the oil pump as these hardly ever go wrong (20 as vehicle technician).
it seems like the oil pressure sensor has failed, to be safe take it to a garage and get the oil pressure checked, simple test remove oil pressure sensor and screw in pressure gauge.
as for temp gauge pos temp sensor but these are now coolant temp sensors and have 3-4 functions would need a live data test to see if sensor failed or dashboard fault.
    hope this helps
