council tax

Hi Can anyone help, Ive received a letter from Buckannan well advising legal action for council tax for 2002. I split with ex in Feb 02 and sold house but cant remember what month it was sold. Can they chase me for this after this time

    This is time limited have you received a liability order or have they been in touch about this in the past few years ?

    Yes they can and rightly so.
    Most other people pay, and ours all go up because of the non-payers.

    Where did you move to after you left the property?

    Basically, when a house is vacated, all furniture removed, then you can claim void on the property for 6 months, after which you would be liable for 50% of the normal charge. So when you left, where did you move to? If you can prove you moved say back to your parents, who were paying the full charge, then you would not be liable for a charge other than what is on the empty house.

    Council Tax is not like other debt, it can be chased for 19 years and they have a public duty to continue to chase it until it is paid one way or another.

    Assuming the council have applied for a liability order within the 6 year period. It would be rare if they had not which is why I asked if they had received such a order.
