I have recently purchased a printer from PC World but it does not include a cable. First question is where can i find the cheapest USB cable from? secondly would a standard printer cable be compatable with the printer and my laptop? please

They'll charge you about £15 for this in PC World.

USB 2.0 A - B Printer Cable Lead 1.8m - £1.98 inc. postage
USB 2.0 A - B Printer Cable Lead 3.0m - £2.98 inc. postage
They're both buy it now's with 2 days left. Have used this seller before with no problems, very handy for when you just need one or two cables - the postage costs are too much from my usual suppliers

if you cba waiting for ebay, argos do them for about £8, but by far the best place will be if you have a local pc repair shop. I used to work in my local repair shop and we sold cables made to length order and just attached the connections on the end. Somewhere local to you might do something similar, but will almost certainly be cheaper.
alternatively, ask your friends or someone if they have any spare ones laying around, i used to have about 6 of the bloody things before i threw them out.0
