Car Deposit paid by Credit Card

  • Credit card company should sort it out, if everything is as explained try reporting it as fraud i.e. £450.

Having said that £50 is a pointless amount to take as deposit for a car worth £10,000, £500 would be more appropiate/typical perhaps there has been a mix up or maybe this isn't the full story.

Maybe we can merge this thread with the why don't dealers haggle over the phone one. Might answer a few questions.

The OP is going to struggle to get it waived as a fraudulent transaction, he/she has given their full card details to the seller.

I give my full card details to companies every day it doesn't mean they can use it to take money out of my account as they please.

That wasn't the point I was making, the bank only have the word of the OP that he hasn't agreed to the £500 being taken, as you suggested earlier, a £500 deposit would seem more appropriate than £50 on a car at this price range.

    .

Then the £50 (0.5%) looks too cheap I'm afraid. I suggest you write a letter asking for the £450 back within 30 days or you will commence legal action.
  • Spoke to my solicitor today who sorted it. As I paid over the phone I am protected legally from this kind of thing happening. Garage didnt have a leg to stand on I was told. I didnt sign anything and everything was conducted over the phone - the garage went back on their word too although this was my word against theirs. Distance selling regulations kicked in and I have got my money back even though the garage tried to kick up a fuss at first.
Dissapointed in some responses here - sheer speculation and a very cynical attitude of guilty unless proven inocent...well you guys were wrong and so was the garage!:p

    Although £50 doesn't sound much, I paid a £100 deposit on a £26k car in November.

Well I assume none of us are solicitors, nor do we charge solicitors fees, so why did you not go to the solicitor in the first place instead of asking for advice on a forum?

I do hope that the solicitors fees come to less than £500.. ;)
