MOT Test Question

I have a question regarding MOT testing.
My wife took her car to be have the MOT test. The garage she took it to (I have since found out!)is notorious for failing cars on items that it should pass (especially with women).
If I take the car somewhere else for an MOT will they know it has already had a recent test and recently failed? Will they know the items it failed on previously? I'm thinking they may have access to all this - thanks to the new computerised MOT system.
Many Thanks,
Paul

There is a formal procedure for reporting such MOT testing stations. Details are here
The computerised MOT system has had a lot of problems lately. You are entitled to a retest at another station but you may have to pay a retest fee in full.
Your local bus transport depot may be registered to carry out MOTs. I have used several in the UK and have had no complaint - much better service than any local garage.0 -
The problem with MOTs is that if you appeal the garage could say "on the day that your car was brought in, our inspector was of the opinion that XXXXX was sufficient to fail your car". You may get a second opinion from another garage and your car may pass, but it doesn't do anything about the toe-rags at the first garage. Your local trading standards should be informed and they can be left to investigate it.0

Thanks guys.
Well, I've just had word from the 2nd MOT garage where I took the car today.
They didn't fail it on any of the earlier failures - (brake discs, wheel bearings, suspension, shocks, headlights) but did fail it on one CV joint. A lot better than the first fail......A**HOLES !!!!0 -
I once took my car to one garage and it failed on the wheel bearings and a couple of other minor things. I had asked that if it failed could I take it to another garage to be repaired (and then retest at original garage free). I took it to second garage and they said there was nothing wrong with the bearings! I took car back for retest and it passed (having not touched the bearings). I don't trust them (all garages!!), I always ask if I can have work done elsewhere if cheaper and take it back for free retest if necessary.Torgwen..........

you dont have to ask to take it elsewhere for work doing. remember all they are doing is testing your car. if it does fail on something just book a retest with them and trundle along to another garage to get the problems fixed.0

Unfortunately, most garages don't give free retests these days due to the more labour intensive tests !! These longer tests (according to VOSA) are designed to improve MOT test standards..... WHAT A JOKE !!!0

i recently had my little ol fiesta, mot'd at a garage i have used for a 3 years (since we had the zafira)
they have always been good,
anyway the garage bloke, said the rules now are that if your car fails the mot it is not allowed to leave their premises............ until it is fixed....... sounded odd to me,
but seeing as i need a lot of work ( i knew it was coming.!!!!!) i left it with them......
does the 'remain on the companies land' sound right.......?smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

I believe you only need to leave it with them if you want the free retest.0

Have it MoTed by the council as recommended on this site.0
