Is it safe to give only the green slip from V5 ?

The DVLA would certainly never get into the detail of advising someone to leave a deposit -its none of their business, out of their scope of expertise and frankly, wrong.
I'm not sure what your buyer is up to, but don't give him a scrap of documentation until they have paid in full. Your only going to give him the green slip anyway when its sold aren't you?0 -
Keep the car and key, and cover yourself with a short written contract
stating you are accepting a deposit and allowing him to use the V5 green section 9(?) to obtain road tax, the car remains your property until the balance of £XXXXX is paid. If no balance is paid before [enter date] the deal becomes void and the deposit is returnable after deduction of costs (new V5 being one possible cost)
OR tell him to insure it in his name bring the certificate or cover note with him and you'll go to the post office with him on Saturday to buy the VED
BTW there was another thread on here about a girl whose exboyfriend somehow managed to get a new V5 from DVLA without the DVLA asking her as registered keeper for her permission. I don't think she ever came back to tell us just what the DVLA's explanation was for that to happen.
