Windows 7, Homegroup and network

Set up
Main PC connected via ethernet cable to a wireless router (Buffalo 54g). Router connect to a cable modem.
Laptops connect wirelessly to router to access the internet
All have windows 7 premium
Firewalls are the standard windows 7 ones
Problem
For some reason, my main PC is no longer in the Homegroup which I originally set it up in, and it states that it is connected to a public network, and will not let me change to a private network or join the Homegroup.
It will see my other wireless laptops, and can access folders on them, but in the "Network" screen (where it shows the other things on the network) there is a yellow bar at the top of the box saying "This computer is not connected to a network. Click to connect ...." and when I click it, I get a "no connections available" message pop up.
I've tried deleting and remaking connections, but still no sign of the homegroup - and yet by all accounts the PC can connect to the other laptops - however the other laptops can't see the main PC
How can I get the main PC to joint the homegroup?

Hi open the homegroup from the start button view homegroup settings then select leave homegroup then rejoin. However if the network is still showing public you need to go into open network and sharing centre, select the adapter settings on the left and delete the connection and the connect to a network button next to reinstall as it was. edit and select as a private network4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex .
