As per title really, can I install dLan (Devolo AVplus) and still use my existing HomeHub2 for wireless access? Or do I need to get a devolo wireless extender? Just trying to think about this is making my head hurt so please speak slowly and carefully... :)

I have a BT internet with a HomeHub (wireless) but it doesn't work over the whole flat. I can't face the hassle of negotiating with my LL to run cables all over the place so I'd like to run the internet over the mains ring (dLAN). But the Wii and my kids laptops use wireless so I'd like to keep the HomeHub working. Is this possible?

  • Yes. Plugging in a mains networking kit will have no impact on your HomeHub's wireless capabilities.

It will work BUT you wil need to run a cable between your HomeHub (using one of the spare LAN sockets) and the Devolo to create the LAN. you will then have to use a cable from the second Devolo to whatever piece of kit is not picking up the wireless network. The wireless signal will still work as normal.

? Which way round do I route them though, HomeHub then Devolo or Devolo then Homehub? Does it matter?

I'm feeling embarrassed, I started my IT career working in telecoms and networks and now I'm not even confident enough to wire up my own flat - DOH!

  • How many of these HomePlug units do you have? You need at least two to start with; using Ethernet cables you link the HomeHub to one and something else to the other be it a computer, Ethernet switch or a wireless access point. The plugs simply bridge the gap using the mains wiring.

    See here for diagrams.
