ferries from uk to brittany

does anyone have any hints about how to get to Brittany cheaply. We are wanting to go over around july 25th until august 4 and bring the car. There are 2 adults and one child. I've only found prices from £300 onwards which is beyond our budget. any suggestions welcome!

All the cheaper spaces on the long ferry crossings get booked up quickly every year, and those dates are especially popular being peak weeks. Have you looked at going on the day before and returning the day after, just in case there are better fares available and spending a couple of nights in a Formule1 or similar cheap hotel?
The shorter crossings to Cherbourg or Caen may be cheaper too, and the drive isn't too bad from there to Brittany.
Last year we ended up going via Calais and driving down to Brittany with an overnight stop near Rouen. Never again!!! It was a French bank-holiday and we just sat in traffic jams for nearly 12 hours each way. The loos in the services had 40 minute queues and just couldn't cope with the volume of people and cars. I would pay the £300 rather than go through that ordeal again!
